Participants received information related to ESSA data for the students with disabilities subcategory and learned about the six collaborative teaching approaches designed to maximize instruction for students with and without disabilities. Our proud princi-pal was able to visit the capitol this week to witness education committees and meet with legislators. Meeting Senator Trumbull was an honor and sharing with him our celebrations and struggles was humbling. Leadership is advocacy and Mrs Faircloth was excited to do that this week!

Today was a deliciously fun learning day in some of our fifth grade classes at Hiland Park Elementary! 😄

Students explored the importance of writing clear step-by-step instructions—and just as importantly, reading and following them carefully—as they used snack items to build creative structures. From airplanes and houses to hamburgers and pizzas, the designs were imaginative and impressive! ✈️🏠🍔🍕

While organizing their ingredients, students sorted items that were malleable (our Word of the Day) versus those that were rigid, leading to great discussions about properties of materials. The learning went even deeper as students talked about what it means to be malleable in thinking—when flexibility matters, how ideas can change, and why being adaptable is sometimes the best approach.

Hands-on learning, rich conversations, and lots of fun made for a fantastic fifth-grade experience! 🎉📚

How Hiland Park Counselors Max & Jamie Are Bringing the Counseling Plan to Life
At Hiland Park Elementary, our school counselors, Max and Jamie, are committed to building a counseling program that strengthens relationships, grows student leadership, and supports families. Through intentional schoolwide activities and family engagement events, they are putting the Comprehensive School Counseling Plan into action every day. Two recent initiatives—Veterans Cards and Parent University—show how our counseling plan is being brought to life across campus.

🇺🇸 Veterans Cards Activity: Building Leadership, Empathy, and Community
The Veterans Cards project is more than a craft—it’s a meaningful experience that aligns directly with our Comprehensive School Counseling Plan. As students create handwritten cards and messages for local veterans, they practice:

Empathy & kindness

Service & gratitude

Leadership & responsibility

These skills tie into the Leader in Me framework and the Ron Clark House System, both of which emphasize student leadership, relationship building, and positive school culture. By engaging in this community-based act of service, students strengthen the Body, Heart, Mind, and Spirit dimensions of growth—the very foundation of the counseling plan. The result is a schoolwide sense of pride, belonging, and connection.
